Wikipedia tells me it’s a crane fly or southern green stink bug (!) When I came across it on the sidewalk I stopped in my tracks. It was in Kansas, not here in Carlsbad, even though Carlsbad is further south than Kansas. I don’t know what made me look twice. I had no idea it was a bug. But there in the shadow are its head and antennae. I noticed no “stink,” just an unlikely brightness and stillness. Never saw anything like it before.
Never noticed anything like it before. ??? Some bug-ologist recognize this cute?
That is, what it does? What it eats? Maybe it only stinks if you squash it. ??? Wikkipedia, here I come!
Not a crane fly. It is indeed green stink bug, a member of the true bug family. There are at least a couple of species of green stink bugs. According to my various insect guides, they range throughout much of North America. We get them here. I love looking at them, because to me they look like small jewels. Too bad they are an agricultural pest. Nice photo!
